Japan’s Best Hotels & Ryokans

Mandarin Oriental, Tokyo Signature RestaurantWelcome to our Weekly Video Q&A, where we answer your questions about Japan travel! This week’s question comes from Raquel in Irvine, California:

“When I travel I usually like to stay in boutique hotels. What are some of the best hotels in Tokyo, and Japan?”

Don’t feel like watching a video? Read below for this week’s answer!

Great question, Raquel!

Japan has so many great luxury and boutique hotels that trying to keep this list short was a challenge.

We’ve included our favorite boutique and luxury hotels and ryokans (traditional inns) in Tokyo, Kyoto and beyond. We love all of these properties for different reasons, and hope you find some new favorites in this list.

With this in mind, we hope this list of our favorite hotels and ryokans — including both small boutique properties and larger luxury hotels — helps you decide which best suit you!

Tokyo Luxury & Boutique Hotels

Tokyo is a hotel lover’s dream, full of properties that will make you want to simply stay in your room and enjoy the view.

It’s blessed with some top-notch luxury properties, and one thing they all have in common is impeccable service (Japanese hospitality is always a highlight).

We’ll begin by listing some of our favorite larger luxury hotels in Tokyo, and then give special mention to two smaller boutique hotels as well.

  • Mandarin Oriental, Tokyo: Beautiful rooms, stunning views and top-notch restaurants.
  • The Peninsula Tokyo: Spacious and modern rooms in an amazing location near Ginza.
  • Park Hyatt Tokyo: Breathtaking views, great dining options and a unique location in Shinjuku.
  • Conrad Tokyo: Truly warm service, modern rooms and fantastic views over Tokyo Bay.
  • Andaz Tokyo Toranomon Hills: We’re excited about Andaz, a sleek new hotel set to open next month (June 2014) in a newly-revitalized area of Tokyo.

But if you prefer something smaller, you might like the Four Seasons Hotel Tokyo at Marunouchi below.

Four Seasons Hotel Tokyo at Marunouchi

Four Seasons Hotel Tokyo at Marunouchi is a true luxury boutique hotel, with just 57 rooms and suites, but most of the amenities you would expect at a world-class luxury hotel.

Rooms are spacious and modern, and the hotel’s location is extremely convenient (in Marunouchi, by Tokyo Station and the Ginza district). If there is a drawback, it’s the lack of panoramic city views that higher-floored hotels offer.

Of course, if 57 rooms still sounds too large to you, you may like Hotel CLASKA below.

Hotel CLASKA

Hotel CLASKA is an intimate, artsy hotel, and one of Tokyo’s few small boutique hotels.

Japan is full of small and intimate properties, but they usually take the form of ryokans – you’ll find more on our favorite ryokans below.

I took a 3 week vacation inJapan...

by paumeMD

And it was one of the BEST time I ever had. BUT:
It IS expensive (Hotels border on ridiculous) so we had a friend there who lived in Kyoto and we did itineraries from there using the Shinkansen and visited the entire country. One catch: believe it or not the stupid train CLOSES at 9pm, so if you miss the last one you're had: you have to sleep wherever you are (and that's where you get had with hotels -very bad memory of a forced night in Hiroshima...). Bottom line: PLAN, PLAN and PLAN some more!
Also I concentrated on the cultural "ancient" aspect of Japan (I mean come on there are tall buldings in the US I'm sure you've seen) so I bypassed Tokyo and only spent 1 day of shopping and in interesting places like Ginko and spent all 3 weeks at Ryokans across the country some of...
